My name is Dr. Jozet Channey, and I’m proud to call Romulus my home. Originally from Detroit, MI, my journey has been shaped by a deep-rooted passion for educational equity, which I’ve seamlessly woven into every aspect of my life—both professionally and personally. I hold a PhD in Education and Psychology, and for the past eight years, my family and I have been part of the Romulus community, where my husband and I are raising our three children. Here, in this vibrant and close-knit community, I’ve found my true calling: working to ensure that every child has access to the education and opportunities they deserve.
Currently, I serve as a Research Area Specialist within the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the University of Michigan. In this role, I support evaluation and assessment for Wolverine Pathways, the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives, and the university’s DEI 2.0 strategic plans, which span 51 units and encompass all schools and colleges across the university. My work is focused on making higher education—including college and technical training after high school—more accessible for all students. I believe that students should be equipped with the knowledge and experiences they need to succeed, whether they choose a traditional academic path or pursue technical training.
As a high school student, I was a proud member of both the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. I firmly believe that students should not have to choose between excelling in traditional academic courses or technical courses. Every student should have the opportunity to become well-rounded, gaining expertise in both areas. This philosophy guides my work, both at the university and in Romulus, where I am deeply committed to helping students achieve their full potential in whatever path they choose.
In Romulus, my commitment to education extends well beyond my professional work. I’m actively involved in my children’s schooling, working hand-in-hand with teachers to support student learning. Whether I’m reading with students, helping with letter recognition and phonics, or discussing the importance of higher education in all its forms, I’m deeply invested in the success of our children. I also engage with attendance liaisons to address attendance challenges and provide a parental perspective, ensuring that our students have the support they need to be present and engaged in their learning.
Additionally, I’m honored to serve on the steering committee for the district’s strategic plan, where I contribute my insights and expertise to help shape the future of education in Romulus. My research and work are dedicated to bridging the gaps between schools, families, and the wider community, creating spaces where our students can thrive not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
Romulus isn’t just where I live; it’s where I’m invested. It’s where I’m committed to making a difference. I believe in the power of community, and I’m here to work alongside you to build a brighter future for all our students. Together, we can ensure that every child in Romulus has the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed.
