Building Educational Equity, Empowering Our Community
I’m Dr. Jozet Channey, and I’m running for the Romulus School Board because I believe in a future where every child, no matter their background, has the chance to succeed. With my roots in Detroit and my home in Romulus, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of education on families and communities. I’m dedicated to ensuring every student gets the support and opportunities they deserve.
A Leader in Educational Equity
In my role at the University of Michigan, I’ve been at the forefront of creating inclusive learning environments. I work on evaluations for programs like Wolverine Pathways and the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives, which aim to make education more accessible and more equitable for students. My professional journey has been focused on using research to drive meaningful change in education.
A Community Advocate
My commitment to education goes beyond my professional work. As a parent in Romulus, I’ve been actively involved in my children’s schools and our community. Whether it’s helping with phonics lessons, reading with students, or assisting with daily classroom activities, I’m deeply invested in supporting both students and educators. My role on the steering committee for the district’s strategic plan has allowed me to help shape the future of education in our community, and I’m excited to continue this work.
Key Issues
Ensure Equitable Access to High-Quality Education I believe every child deserves an excellent education, regardless of their background. I’m committed to expanding access to high-quality resources, from early literacy programs to college and career readiness initiatives, while also fostering students' academic and technical skills for holistic development. By equipping students with both foundational knowledge and practical skills, we can better prepare them for future success in a rapidly changing world.
Build Stronger Bridges Between Schools, Families, and the Community Strong partnerships between schools and families are crucial for student success. To support this, I am committed to enhancing avenues of communication within our community and increasing opportunities for schools, families, and the broader community to engage and work together. This will strengthen our relationships and foster a more connected support network.
Enhance Staff Support School staff, including teachers, administrators, and support personnel, are essential to our education system. I’m committed to advocating for the resources, support, and fair compensation they deserve. I will work to address class sizes, enhance mental health support, and foster a more respectful and unified work environment to help retain our dedicated school staff.
Create Safe Spaces, Foster Strong Minds Schools should support students academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. I will advocate for comprehensive mental health resources to support students' needs and push for effective safety measures to protect against violence and bullying. By integrating mental health support with strong physical safety initiatives, we can ensure that students feel secure and receive the support they need to thrive.
Why Me?
I bring a unique blend of professional expertise, research-based insights, and real-world experience as a parent and community member. My dedication to educational equity is unwavering, and I understand the challenges families face. As an active leader in our community, I’m committed to building a brighter, more inclusive future for all students.
